Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) are so called anionic clays, meaning the individual platelets of the LDH have a positive excess charge. Perkalite is based on Magnesium Alumina Hydroxides, where the excess charge is located at the alumina position. The positive excess charge can be counterbalanced by miscellaneous modifiers: e.g. organic anions, OH- or CO32-.
| By the organic modification of Perkalite, the interaction between the individual Perkalite platetlets is reduced and the compatibility with the polymer matrix improved. A true nanocomposite can be obtained when Perkalite is properly compounded into a polymer. |
