Initiators for PVC

Akzo Nobel produces a wide range of organic peroxide initiators for the production of polyvinylchloride (PVC). Organic peroxides can be used as single initiator or in a combination of initiators in order to optimize the polymerization rate.

Peroxide Reactivity
The first and maybe most important criterion for initiator selection is reactivity. The reactivity can be expressed by the initiator half life. The half-life is the time required to reduce the orignal initiator content at a given temperature by 50%.

Initiator Safety
Organic peroxides are unstable chemical compounds, decomposing at relatively low temperatures. They can, however, be handled and stored safely if proper precautions are followed. Although a number of organic peroxides can be safely stored a ambient tempertures, most require some form of temperature control.

Peroxide formulation
Organic peroxides are available in different formulations.  Water based peroxide formulations are suspensions of solid peroxides or emulsions of liquid peroxides, that are much safer than the usual solid, liquid or solvent based peroxides. Peroxide suspensions and emulsions can be dosed automatically and can be applied in closed reactor technology. Additionally, water based peroxide formulations can be transported in bulk or intermediate bulk containers (IBC's).
